By 'local' you mean local to where we live, or local to New England?

Can I just use a local setting and a coloquial tone?

I don't see why not. The more the merrier in any case.

But now I have a question. And I feel bad for asking it, since I'm the one who just posted the damn rules.

In the space of this afternoon and early evening, I've written what I believe to be a decent story for the contest but it came out to around 2600 words  . I thought I'd paced it better than that--it came to less than 4 single-spaced pages. But if I do my best to whittle it down a bit, will anyone object if it comes out to slightly more than 2000 words? It's fairly tight as is.

If not, I suppose I can summarize some parts, but I thought I'd ask.

I suppose you might as well whiddle it down to 2000 words, or close to, instead of making a new story.

Well, I've got 8 more days. I'll see what I can do between now and then.

I've only come up with outlines for two possible stories :(

Well, I wouldn't worry about that. Quick doesn't necessarily mean good, and I may think better of what I've written when I make time to reread the whole thing.

I had just started another short story, and I suppose I was worried about getting bogged down trying to work on two.

Some day, when you have plenty of time, I want to hear all about the sweet hamsters in New Hampshire.

Every. Salacious. Detail.
