Gustafsson pips Monnet in Ireland

Post by jasonvs987 »

Sweden's Sophie Gustafson drained a six-foot Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Driver birdie putt on the final hole of Faithlegg Golf Club today to secure a dramatic win in the £100,000 Waterford Crystal Ladies Irish Open.

Gustafson, the form player on this year's Evian Tour, overturned a four shot deficit at the start of the day to win her third title of the season by a solitary stroke from Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Irons French rookie Marine Monnet.

The popular Swede fired six birdies in a three under par 69 to finish with a six under par 282 winning aggregate, while her French rival posted a two over 74.

"I didn't have a particular score in my mind on Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Fairway Wood the first tee, my plan was just to try and get in reach of Marine (Monnet) and then try and attack on the closing stretch," said Gustafson after collecting the £15,000 winner's cheque.

"There are three par 5's on the back nine, which Callaway X-22 Tour Irons was to my advantage, and I also felt that if I could put a little pressure on her then she may get nervous since she had never been in this position before."

Gustafson's plan worked to perfection. After closing Callaway Golf the gap to three shots after a one under par front nine, the 26-year-old from Saro made birdies at the 10th, 13th, 14th and 18th, where she fired an eight iron from 131 yards before rolling in the winning putt.
