Does a .wmv play on a dvd player?

Question: I have created a movie on Windows movie maker and now I want to play it on TV using the dvd player. Can it play it or do I have to convert it. How to convert wmv to dvd playable? If I have to convert it then what format. Also will .avi work if I do the same thing?
