Cannon cutoff

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, but I was just wondering if there is an actual cut off point between lovecraft's cannon and Derleth's. I'm trying to get my head around all the outer gods and elder gods but it's confusing me trying to differentiate between original and expanded cannon. If anyone can offer any help it'd be much appreciated
