New Necronomicon Page Up

Post by Aleister »

Take a look:

http://www.templeofdagon.com/mythos/necronomicon.htm

I will probably still add more info to it. I just wanted to have a page where I can send people who are arguing that it is real :) It discusses the truths and the myths behind it.

If anyone has anything to add let me know!

btw, it is really hard to type 'myths' without typing 'mythos' after working on this site for so long!

"The Necronomicon has not proven itself to exist, therefore - it must exist!"

A quote that I read from somewhere. The point is that its not as important to try to franticly disclaim the Necro? Why? Whats the point?

Simply because it is quite maddening to hear people talk about it being real. If only someone could show a single mention of it before Lovecraft's time I would be quiet about it :)

Most of the people who fully believe it to be real know very little, if anything about Lovecraft. If they at least researched it a little they might be suprised.

I do not really have a problem with people who choose to believe in it, as long as they understand the background information, and how Lovecraft fits into it. Know what I mean?

It is like someone believing in the 'One Ring' but not knowing anything whatsoever about Tolkien :) (weird analogy I know but it sort of works).

I get the analogy. It surely annoys the hell out of me too when some satanist/black magician-wannabe's jump in my face with them owning the Nec. Well, the Simon Nec anyway. People will eventually close their eyes and see what they please to see.

Exactly. If I do seem to be a fanatic about it, I do not really intend to. People can believe what they like certainly. :)

Some people believe in things when there is absolutely no proof.

Other people believe in things when there is absolutely no proof, and a large amount of disproof.

The only time it bothers me is when the people either do not understand the disproof, or do not even know that it exists. And that is what the page supplies. ;)

I think most of them do understand the evidence, but their desire for a little dark-edged excitement is so strong that they carry on as if the book is real anyway.

Yeah that is a good point. This also feeds into a nice conspiracy as well, which of course, lots of people want.

Yet it is strange how everyone that makes him/herself to believe the Nec exists must know how the book is fatal to Mankind and yet they crave for it and seek it feverishly. In all common sense they should keep away from it.

One of the questions I asked S. T. Joshi in the interview (which should be coming out very soon! he is just a very busy person :) ) is this:
It is a pet peeve of mine to hear people discussing the “Necronomicon” as being a real written work. Do you think this is primarily due to misinformation (which the internet is notorious for), or from the wish of many for it to actually exist? Have you ever seen this level of belief with any other fictitious writing?
I think it will be interesting to hear his opinion as he most likely knows more (and understands more) about Lovecraft than anyone else on the planet. I am sure he has delt with a lot of this too in his life.
