Apparently the audio they found along with the footage included the sounds of Treadwell and his girlfriend being killed and eaten by a bear, but Herzog, who edited the footage decided not to include that bit.

Those who heard the tape say the bear attacked Treadwell (who screamed for help from the girlfriend) first and was then surprised and driven away by the girlfriend.

Surprised bears, however, have a tendency to counterattack. The girlfriend was driven back, and the bear resumed munching on Treadwell (now screaming for the girlfriend to get away). The girlfriend then screamed even louder and at a higher pitch, which some feel caused the bear to attack her.

If I remember right, the search party found Treadwell's head attached to part of his spine, and relatively more of the girlfriend. Treadwell's face was frozen in a tortured grimace, the girlfriend's had a look of peace. I'm wondering if she passed out from sheer terror and just became an easy snack.

Pretty much what I heard when I was told to watch it, but the girl describing to me mentioned that Treadwell kept shouting at his girlfriend to play dead. Which didn't seem to work.

Didn't work? She should get an Oscar for her performance.
