the outsider is a reanimated corpse, right? maybe hpl was alluding to his own old-fashioned ways, feeling like he should no longer be alive in the modern age. he saw himself as a throwback english gentleman in a world of degenerating standards and foundations. could be wrong

Yeah, the guy climbs to the top of a tower and comes out in a tomb. He finds a nearby house and is surprised that the inhabitants scream at the sight of him... until he sees his own reflection in the mirror.

Jesus Prime wrote:The stay in the castle itself seems autobiographical, after that it sinks to almost a pastiche of Poe. Not his greatest work.
Well The Outsider was written as an homage to Poe.

Ramsey Campbell read the first portion of "The Outsider" at the Lovecraft Film Festival, stopping at the point where the narrator finds that the top of his castle is actually a place of solid ground in some burial chamber. This, originally, was where the story ended. Then Lovecraft's imagination took him further into the narrative. There is neither meaning nor plot in the tale -- it is merely a bit of dark phantasy, a tissue of dreaming........
