Good Evening
This is my first post on the board so I might some thing here. It is awhile since I got my teeth into the whole HPL scene. Hard to say for certain whether he was racist, that is a new one. He was a pragmatic and down to earth gentleman, and loved and acted out that of an English Gentleman. Because of his hleping hands too encourage others with writting, I would find it hard to think along those lines. Is there actual material that would say so apart from maybe his novels? HPL is much a world wide thing, and I think the racist idead would have come to light by now?
Looking at it he was a simple individual with simple tastes, but in his days because of the lack of getting around unlike today would make it hard to be a true racist just an idea. a mean he did not travel the world and most of his life was spent in one area.
Best Wishes

William

Actually, William, you'll probably find quite a lot of people yelling and screaming that he was racist-and he did indeed write racist materials, as well as frequently hold racist opinions. Why people are so fascinated by this idea I'm not sure. If you read works of his such as "The Horror at Red Hook" and "The Street", you will find he suffered from some xenophobia, although, as his other works show (in which he could practically be accused on xenophilia), it only applied to humans and was actually a relatively narrow part of his personality.

racism is one of those things that people will vehemently oppose whether it matters or not... hpl's legacy may be smudged by this issue, but if that's all somebody cares to know about him, it's their loss. i say read the stories and get away from this disappointing reality, just as he was trying to do by writing them.

!), to the effect that Lovecraft, as a rule, was extremely courteous and friendly to individuals but vehemently hated humanity, and its subdivisions (races, organizations, etc.).
Like I always say "I'm not racist, I just hate everyone equally" :-D

Racism is a pretty insignificant problem compared to, say, the return of the Elder Gods.

Thank you, and I still wonder even now. why the racist idea is a such interesting idea?

Thank you for the works as quoted I will take the time to read to get a clearer picture

Hello
That is why I came to the Temple of Dagon in the first place, to enjoy the gentleman and his works and all the neat Mythos Ideas. I was just taken back a little that was all as I have not heard of HPL in that light. I guess that there is always room for adding to something new for me anyway.
I can well imagine his works on the faint hearted? :-D

Best wishes

William

He's right, how do we hope to destroy an ancient evil when we can't even love eachother? Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together...

Lovecraft was a product if his time as we all are, back then tollorance was not taught, rather the opposite. So maybe he was racists and sexist but its not something any of us can call him out for, just because now a days we have a better perception on race and sex for the most part, dosent make us qualified to judge those of the past. Please let me be clear im not taking a shot at anyone, and im not saying the point of this post was to insult Lovecraft, im just offering my POV :)

I never accused anyone of anything, but by posting something like that, you are showing a great level of intolorance, My statement was generic not specific, there was racizem then and now, same with sexizm, but now people (for the most part) arnt taught it, back then it was diffrent. Understand what someone is saying before making a heated attack.
