"Americana 101" - Small Talk With Loons

Post by decadence »

"I think that the beach will have a hard time getting a date, because it has crabs" - some idiot at the local car wash making small talk with me in the noon sun, because, uh, they have no other reason to be standing around...

He probably heard someone else say it a week ago and had been all excited waiting for the perfect chance to spring it on someone.

Something similar happened to me at a supermarket once. I was standing in line at the counter and an older guy was in front of me with his stuff and I saw that he had those small wild strawberries in a box there. So I stood behind him for a minute or so because the line was very long and the shop assistant was a newbie. Then suddenly the guy turned to me and said with a somewhat annoyed voice: "You know how these wild strawberries remind me of women? No you don't, and I'm gonna tell you - they are small and little and just as you have had eat them so you have your appetite ready, they are all eaten already. Because they are so small."
I just nodded and looked away. Then there was a two minute silence again until I payed for my stuff and walked away fast.

Odd indeed. I am always fascinated by such exchanges. Thanks for sharing that. Interesting. I recall something that happened in the company of Aleister, and I believe it was at the Electronics Store during our hunt for "that elusive crystal"...

Aleister, do you recal?? :D

Yes.. I remember it clearly.. I think I had some momentary thought-transferance with someone, assuming their identity for a few moments only to go back to normal upon leaving the store.. quite strange :)

Red box crystals?

Anyways, I've had someone randomly spring a magic trick on me once or twice, which was a bit humorous, and I've had plenty of encounters with random people wanting to say something to me (especially when flying) for whatever reason.

I am enamored with those people who feel the incessant need to comment to me about weather patterns. What the fuck makes weather talk so ice-breaking, when both parties will likely never cross paths again? It is like asking someone on a date who is in casket? What are the fuckin odds?

That is a good question. Do you ever feel the need to say something when standing by someone? Or no?
