The End of the World
My theory on how mankind would finally and ultimately be screwed over in the world of the CM involves Cthulhu and the rest of the Great Old Ones, the American military, and Nyarlathotep.
Keep in mind these facts:
Nyarlathotep seems intent on giving humanity the key to its own destruction, generally understood to be in the form of nuclear energy.
Cthulhu knows the spells to revive the Great Old Ones and resume their rule of earth.
The Great Old Ones can never really be destroyed . . . but Cthulhu's prison at R'lyeh can.
The stars are right, and R'lyeh is heaved once again to the surface. But this time, everyone knows about it. The Crawling Chaos whispers the maddening knowledge into the ears of all mankind, and under his guidance the governments of the world are forced to acknowledge the existence of the Old Ones as scientific fact. Naval forces are dispatched to guard R'lyeh from any cultists that may want in.
Occult experts are called in, and world leaders are made aware of the danger posed by Cthulhu's being freed. Perhaps they would reach the final decision on their own, or perhaps Nyarlathotep would give them the nudge they need. But eventually, it would be decided that the best course of action would be the destruction of R'lyeh by nuclear weapons, Nyarlathotep's "gift" to humanity.
It would seem to work at first. In an outstanding show of nuclear power, R'lyeh would be obliterated from the Earth. So would the Old Ones, for a time. But they can never die, and the prison at R'lyeh would be vaporized. Cthulhu would be freed from his tomb by nuclear weapons, under Nyarlathotep's guidance. Cthulhu wakes the Old Ones from their primal slumber . . . and we're screwed.

With that line of stories the "Delta Green" deals with. As a matter of fact I have started to put together a story where the nuclear plants are serving as temples for the Old Ones. Anyway, about being screwed, Im afraid we never had any chance. When humans were created by the Old Ones, we were almost stillborn in the department of hope.

I recently read a very good book by Derleth - The Trail of Cthulhu - I highly recommend it..
The novel is in several sections.. starting with Prof. Shrewsbury traveling around trying to destroy all of the "entrances" of the great old ones. He meets others along the way who help him in his quest, and at the end he gets the government help him to drop a nuke on R'lyeh..
Needless to say, Cthulhu (who is escaping at this time - as the stars are right), merely forms back together again after being blasted into a mist.
Interesting thoughts!

Actually Ive heard Mythos related End Of The World theories before and every time this is what people come up with. Its not hard to think of this scenario when everything is mostly done for you.SplatteredAndScattered wrote:Well, damn, and here I was thinking I was being so clever with my little scenario.
Hrm. Nothing new under the sun, eh?

I admit that I'm a total n00b here, but didn't Lumley write briefly about nuclear weapons in the Titus Crow stories? The Cthlonians were extremely vulnerable to them, and they didn't exactly make Cythlla happy... nuclear weapons seem to be an okay tactic, as long as you're not fighting a Great Old One with nuclear abilities (ex. Azathoth).
Nor is it to be thought that man is either the oldest or the last of earth's masters, or that the common bulk of life and substance walks alone. The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be.

My theory's better.
Cthulhu awakes from his prison in R'lyeh and begins to reek havoc on the world. Seeing as Tokyo is the closest location he marches there with haste and begins to destroy the unprotected capital. Meanwhile thanks to global warming the south pole has been melting at a rapid pace. The Elder Things haven driven their Shoggoth slaves back into the depths soon realize they're old nemesis Cthulhu is back! Realizing they can't defeat the new Cthulhu alone (He's been training his magic powers and he's part robot or something now.), They call on the Yitthian Race for assistance. Their top scientists are brain raped into the bodies of the Elder Things and with new Shoggoth servants begin to build a weapon to defeat Cthulhu.
Meanwhile in Tokyo Japan, Cthulhu is destroying pretty much all of Japanese culture...
Back in Antarctica, The super Yielder Thing has been completed, and now flys off to face Cthulhu on the charred remains of Tokyo...in the End Good Guys Win
