mythos books

Is it worth it to buy and/or read and cthulhu mythos collections? the only story I've read outside of what Lovecraft has done is Crouch End by Stephen King (the first mythos tale i ever read). I've seen a shitload of them on the net( namely Amazon), are they any good? and is anything by Derelth any good?

the only book i own is tales of the cthulhu mythos by h.p. lovecraft and divers hands, published by arkham house. it has stories from several famous mythos authors, ranging from mediocre to excellent.

other than that, i've just checked things out of the library to read...

Derleth's Mythos tales are very good . . . for me to poop on!

Most anthologies I've read contain one or two gems, a couple of turds, and a lot of mediocre drivel. Few were worth the price. Try the library first.

Derleth wrote some very good Mythos stories, when he began to pen the fake "collaborations" "with" H. P. Lovecraft. The short novel, THE LURKER AT THE THRESHOLD is a tale that still entertains me, and I consider "The Survivor" one of the finest Cthulhu Mythos stories ever written. These tales have recently been issued as trade pb from Del Rey as THE WATCHERS OUT OF TIME AND OTHERS. However, some of these tales are bloody awful, poor and uninspired rewrites of Lovecraft's original stories. But there are enough good things in the book to warrant buying it. If you love the Mythos, then the Chaosium Cycle books edited by Robert M. Price and published by Chaosium and Hippocampus have a blend of old and new stories. Hippocampus Press is publishing some of the finest new Mythos collections and novels being written today. I believe there is a huge community of Lovecraftians and Cthulhu Mythos fans at amazon.com who review any new Mythos collections that are published.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed "Lurker"; seeing all the railing against Derleth's work here and elsewhere makes me a bit leery to admit I liked the book and some of his other work. It's not as good as the real thing, but I don't find it horrific. I was just amused that the last time I read the "Watchers" collection, almost every story was about some guy inheriting a big old creepy house and then bad stuff happens--the same as the plot of "Lurker."
