Movie: The Descent

Post by E.A. Lovecraft »

Saw it a few days ago. It's definitely one of the better horror flics to come out in the last few years.

Admittedly, I cringed when I realized all the characters were women; I figured it would be just another bland exercise of watching scared girlies do dumb things (i.e. falling at the last minute, dropping a weapon, freezing up and crying, etc.) before dying. Much to my delight, I was wrong.

Anywho, this flic has shades of "The Lurking Fear" and "The Beast in the Cave." Definitely worth the rental price if you haven't seen it yet.

i was most interested in the story of the cave creatures.. since they're so humanoid, maybe they were a tribe of people who went underground and started changing. did they adapt, or were they mutated? etc. etc.

if they make a sequel, i'll probably check it out

The Descent was truly amazing. The bit where you glimpse the crawler in the backround was really chilling. I was terrified by the bit in the pothole before that too... I can't imagine anything more anxiety inducing than crawling through spaces like that. Very well paced since the car crash and the caving distracted you from anticipating the arrival of the creatures.

The Cave was rubbish in comparison because the protagonists were too high teche'd up that you found it difficult to worry for their saftey (ie they could breathe underwater for 24hrs etc), and there were too many of them. The monsters were daft and unconvincing (ie what did they eat to survive all that time and why did they evolve so big.....problems that wouldn't arise if it was suggested that they were some kind of spiritual evil but it wasn't)

The only good thing about the cave was what's-his-name from sunset beach who I have had a soft spot for for a long time now and was what made me go and see the movie in the 1st place.

Anyone see Mariano Baino's "Dark Waters"?... (not to be confused with the asian horror "dark water"... now there's a Lovecraftian horror worthy of the title. You can really tell he gets the essence of the material.

I'm not entirely sure about that one.... I've just not seen "dark water" but want to distinguish it from "dark waters".... I liked the ring, but I liked the Silent Hill games even better so I can't really criticise Japanese horror... at least they havn't contamenated it with humor yet. I find there's somthing insincere about horror/comedy.

The Descent was an ace movie. I saw it when it was released in the states and then watched the original longer UK ending online.

It really was a well done horror film. It may have shown the horror, but at least it didn't explain the horror.
