I reread War of the Worlds not that long ago and enjoyed it, although his depiction of the clergyman (a curate, I think) seemed somewhat bitter. Not surprising, maybe, given his views, although Lovecraft was more generous in that respect.

Other writers of apocalyptic stories I've enjoyed are George Stewart (Earth Abides), John Wyndham (The Day of the Triffids and The Kraken Wakes) and John Christopher. Christopher wrote stories for children as well as grownups; so far, I've only read the former--When the Tripods Came and the triology that follows it. But reading about his other books recently has me interested in the rest. I'll post back when I've gotten around to it.

I'm reading The Shadow over Innsmouth to my kids and reading Rats in the Walls with my wife.

After that I have a book on ghosts of the Pacific Northwest that I want to read.
