Dagonite Radio Theatre

Post by Hodgson »

EDIT: The total has been reduced from 15 to 8 mb, and broke into 2 parts of about 4 mb each.

Part 1
Part 2

----------------------------------------------original message follows
Here's the deal. I've been wanting to record in multitrack for a while now and finally found and downloaded the proper software the other night. So today I thought I'd see what I could do with it.

I recorded "The Tell-Tale Heart", complete with announcer, audience, music and sound effects. The only catch? The file is 15.4 mb.

I think it came out fairly well, but before I babysit an upload to geocities (or, barring that, yousendit), I thought I'd see if anyone would be willing to download something of that size.

If not, I may be doing some other things of a similar nature, maybe original stories, with music, sound effects, etc., essentially radio plays. Let me know what you think.

yeah, i'd give it a shot. have you tried changing the compression settings to make the file smaller? some podcasts and things can get away with 8-bit 11khz mono or even less

Let me work with it. I'll try a lower bitrate and/or using a compression utility. I don't have winzip on my computer at the moment, but I'm about to download something called sevenzip, which makes .zip files. I don't remember that .zip files compressed mp3 very much, but let me work with it.

Incidentally, the multitrack software is Kristal Audio Engine--free and not bad at all.

I changed the bitrate to 96kbps and got the size down to 9 mb. If the compression utility offers any significant improvement over it, I'll use that as well. Otherwise, I'll just upload it and try to post a link shortly.

I've divided it into 2 parts of about 3.7 and 4.3 mbs respectively--8 mb total, so an improvement on my earlier estimate (I reduced it to 80 kbps and it sounded fine).

The first part is up; the second part will be up later. The upload takes a while

Part 1
Part 2

Note: Right-click and "save as". Just clicking will give you a "page not available" message.

Second note: For some reason, typing it into the address bar also seems to work. But clicking the link will still get you nothing.

Well, if you listen to it, let me know what you think. I can bear in mind the criticisms when I try my next audio project.

it's pretty good. i think you could boil it down more, maybe read slightly faster. it's a tricky balance between showcasing poe's writing and performing as an actor.. anyway, i've heard a lot worse.

speaking of audio projects, my dad did a reading of my story and put it on a couple of CDs for me. it came out to something like 100 minutes! the only problem is that it includes some old-version text that isn't there anymore.. but it's pretty neat to hear your story being read. i recommend it for any writer who hasn't done it yet

My podcast tends to be about 26 or so MBs a week. So that is not that large. I would be happy to contribute read tales to this project.

I'm still working on the idea for a proper "radio play" but in the meantime I thought some of you might be interested in a little Lovecraft tribute I worked up. 450kb and about 2 minutes, you can download it from here: http://www.geocities.com/ineldorado/tribute.mp3

Thanks. I'd like it to be a little longer but it may be a while before I get around to it. I still have the play to work out.
