Lovecraft / Crowley Connection

Post by jpjmoffett »

Hey everybody. Have any of you ever heard of a connection or possible meeting between H. P. Lovecraft and Aleister Crowley?

He was his grandson, turns out that Crowley's grandma had a thing for reclusive racist dudes...

I read about that somewhere... I'll have to look it up again. I understood that he knew of Crowley but that they never actually met. He mentions Crowley in one of his stories but again I can't remember which one... maybe "the horror at red hook"??... I'm not being very useful am I?... sorry

It turns out that this is probably a myth. While Crowley did indeed invest some interest in Lovecraft's work and did want to meet him Lovecraft was having none of it. It's well-known that Lovecraft was a total skeptic even though he was very interested in religion and the supernatural. I think he probably thought of Crowley as a bit of a delusional nut case.

As far as I know, they've never met. That would be pretty interesting, though, if they had. I can just imagine how that conversation would have gone!

There's no substantial connection. I don't know all that much about Crowley, but he doesn't sound interesting as anything but a fairly effective pre-internet troll.

As one article put it, "Crowley at his wickedest would hardly raise an eyebrow in Brighton nowadays. The charges levelled against him included not only sorcery but (gasp!) bisexuality, bigamy and (close your eyes for this next bit if you want) drug taking! His 'wickedest man' title has since been usurped by Saddam Hussein and Gary Glitter, not to mention miscellaneous blokes in Portsmouth who look a bit like paedophiles."
