beyond the wall of sleep

Post by JJ Burke »

i just recently read 'beyond the wall of sleep' in dagon and other macabre tales (arkham house 1965), and didn't find it very chilling at all.. more like a spiritual metaphysical kind of thing. this part was memorable:
H.P. Lovecraft wrote:I am an entity like that which you yourself become in the freedom of dreamless sleep. I am your brother of light, and have floated with you in the effulgent valleys. It is not permitted me to tell your waking earth-self of your real self, but we are all roamers of vast spaces and travelers in many ages.
this sounds like it could have been written by an acid-dropping college student in the 1960s or 70s, or a levitating swami of hindustan. i wonder if that was lost in translation to the horror movie
A monkey riding a dog is probably the awesomest thing that could ever happen.

Sounds like alternate lyrics for "Kashmere."

i meant to shoot this a while back, and with less crummy focus:
Image
the text on the left side under my thumb (but above the laurel parentheses) says 'GENUINELY CREEPY AND DISTURBING [Dunwich Herald]'

eh? eh?

There's a lesson in marketing and context for you. That quote was taken from this paragraph:
Beyond the Wall of Sleep offers some genuinely creepy and disturbing moments. Nobody who watches this film will forget the moment when Eischel first attaches his machine to an inmate.
Those four quoted words on the box imply something entirely different than the entire review. I'd have done the same thing if I was them, though.

Still hoping to see the movie's creators get a chance to tackle another Lovecraft project. I'm betting those two guys will be able to use the lessons learned from filming Beyond the Wall of Sleep to create a much better product.
