CANKIRI - Six experts and ten workers have been carrying out excavations to unearth a 1500-year-old six-layer massive underground city near Huyuk village in Orta town of Cankiri city, in central Anatolia.
Cankiri Museum Curator Yusuf Demirci heads the excavations that have received a 105 thousand YTL (70 thousand USD) financial support from Cankiri Governor's Office and Ministry of Culture & Tourism.
Informing the media on the excavations on Monday, Cankiri Governor Ali Haydar Oner said that their team had unearthed chapels, hallways, rooms and other architectural structures.
"During the first season of excavations, our team has managed to unearth the outlines of a city of labyrinth-like architectural structures. They have discovered, indeed, six layers of urban construction such as rooms, hallways, corridors, gates with dead locks, churches and chapels," Governor Oner said.
"We first planned to conclude the excavation next week but now we think that it should go on for at least one more month, if we manage to find additional financial support,'' the governor added
Meanwhile, curator Demirci said, "we have managed to access the third layer for now but we have determined that the city has six layers. We think that it may have other segments beneath the sixth layer but we have absolutely reached the conclusion that the city was built 1500 years ago," the curator added.
My oh my have they gotten the dating wrong! Lord knows what will happen when they get down to the bottom....[/url]
