first lovecraft poem i've read

from 'waste paper: a poem of profound insignificance'
H.P. Lovecraft wrote:I used to ride my bicycle in the night
With a dandy acetylene lantern that cost $3.00
In the evening, by the moonlight, you can hear those darkies singing
Meet me tonight - in dreamland... BAH!
this is at least as disturbing as any of his short stories

Some of his poetry is really good, some really bad, and some really strange. If anyone cares, I have the complete collection of his poetry, I'll type any out if you want. "Nemisis" is quite brilliant, but the same can't be said for "On The Creation of Niggers". Strange man.

apparently, this poem here was a sort of parody.. still, it puts a weird picture in my head of hpl with a straw hat and a cane doing a vaudeville monologue or something. b-zar

Jesus Prime,

Are you referring to Fungi Of Yuggoth & Other Poems?

Personally, my all time favorite HPL poem is, Despair which I've tried to do justice as a spoken word / ambient song, but these things are'nt quite so easy.

Regardless, I must agree with Jesus Prime, HPL's poetry some really good, some really bad, but JJ Burke I think may have hit on it in a way. HPL was acquainted with many different approaches to writing; parodies, vaudville monologues, old limericks, maxims, aphorisms, drunken Viking carols of raping and pillaging. You name it. He even wrote a poem about contracting sexual diseases by philandering about too much, which was directed toward Frank Belknap Long, with whom he was obviously in disagreement about Frank's inclinations toward having some fun before getting married.

Yup Frank was gonna get 'em self some.

"The Ancient Track". It's a complete collection, even has the stuff he wrote when he was nine. It's really good.

I got it used off of Amazon for pretty cheap, but I think it retails new at a hefty price. I'll check later but I think it's in the forty-plus US dollar range.
