Library of America - H. P. Lovecraft: Tales

Post by murgan »

Here is an important article on The Weekly Standard about a new volume of Lovecraft stories aptly titled, The Horror! The Horror! written by the book's editor and famed modern horror novelist Peter Straub.

I bought my copy last week at Barnes & Noble for $31.50, the cover retail price is $35.00. And it is well worth, beautiful and durable quality echoes throughout the material and design. Includes ribbon bookmark and appendix in the back contains a "Chronology" of brief synopsis on H. P. Lovecraft's life from 1890-1937 and his work. Plus two other features included are "Notes on the Text" and "Notes".

The stories in the volume are:

The Statement of Randolph Carter
The Outsider
The Music of Erich Zahn
Herbert West - Reanimator
The Lurking Fear
The Rats in The Walls
The Shunned House
The Horror of Red Hook
He
Cool Air
The Call of Cthulhu
Pickman's Model
The Case of Charles Dexter
The Colour Out of Space
The Dunwich Horror
The Whisperer in Darkness
At The Mountains of Madness
The Shadow over Innsmouth
The Dreams in the Witch House
The Thing on The Doorstep
The Shadow Out of Time
The Haunter of the Dark

Here is the LoA statement:

The Library of America helps to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, and keeping in print, -authoritative- editions of America's best and most significant writing. An independent nonprofit organization, it was founded in 1979 with seed money from the National Endowment for the Humanities and The Ford Foundation.

Library of America editions will last for generations and withstand the wear of frequent use. They are printed on lightweight, acid-free paper that will not turn yellow or brittle with age. Sewn bindings allow the books to open easily and lie flat. Flexible yet strong binding boards are covered with a closely woven rayon cloth. The page layout has been designed for readability as well as elegance.

The reason why this volume should be an investment interest to all Lovecraft fans and lovers of classic literature is stated best in the definitive HPL newsgroup, of which scholars, editors, writers, fans, publishers and those of other interests participate in -- alt.horror.cthulhu. Read the thread titled "Good Lovecraft article" by rms, particularly the last post dated on March 15th. This is not spam neither am I a representive of any publishing press, just an innocent plea to consider adding this beautiful quality volume to your Lovecraft library. The print and text are equal to the Penguin collection in superior readability and presentation, not that rather comparitively plain and dull burdgeoning text print found in the Del Rey collection. And issue an honest request for all to spread the word.
