An Introduction, and imploration...

Hey, I'm k. I'm 18, into the geekalicious, and a relative Lovecraft virgin

Here's a little unneccisary background blabber describing what has led up to this point.. skip ahead if you're not interested, the-arrived-at-my-point-parts are bolded.

Seven years ago, I was attached to a modification called Thor's Hammer, for the game Rune. A game of viking whupass.
Another member of this mod I was in fairly regular contact with went by the name of Grimnir. He was an independent film-maker veritably obsessed with Lovecraft. He was what first sparked the interest within my then 12 year old mind to pursue Lovecraft's work. (Something I am only begining to begin.)
During the time I was attached to that mod, I was playing around and created an interesting concept test. The important thing to know is that you could swim to the bottom of water and run about and fight and whatnot and then jump back up and swim around again. I spent a long time with this idea at the back of my mind, unsure how to implement it as gracefully as I would like, and missing an interesting theme to couple it with. The obvious was standard Atlanteanesque underwater ruins, blah blah blah, overused. Since my correspondence with Grimnir, interest in Lovecraft has danced around just inside the shadows, with regard to my horizons. Recently, I came upon an anthology of Neil Gaimans short stories, two of which take place in Innsmouth of Lovecraftian fame. Suddenly it all clicked together, and I decided I was going to create a deathmatch level using the gameplay dynamic I tripped over however long ago, that was steeped in Lovecraftian goodness.

Which brings me to my point:

I wish to absolutely immerse myself in the imagery of the submarinal realm of the deep ones, the temples, and all of the goodness that goes with it.


I have a particular compilation of Lovecrafts work in mind that I am going to snatch up as soon as I can, and I have been doing research tonight, however an impatient girlfriend is lurking about waiting for my computer so she can play Morrowind, and I fear the Robert E. Howard she is reading will inspire her, and I'll need to keep my eye out for axes and broadswords. heh.

Thus, I ask anyone who cares to share any pictures, descriptions, personal interpretations, or whatever else, to do so, as it will be immensely usefull.

As I go along, I'll post stuff in the Inspired section if people show much of any interest.

Hopefully, I was reasonably coherent up there.

Just buy a lot of HPL books. Read them and voila. There's no shortcut to his imagery.

strange_machinations, I also might recommend playing CthulhuMud. A lot of people do not like text-based online RPGs these days, but it was one of the first things that really got me into Lovecraft. It was as you might put it, an immersion into the world(s).

While it is of course no substitute for books, it was really interesting to walk around seeing things I had read about, and vice versa :)

CthulhuMud has a very long history.. and I do not even know a lot of it..

I do have the information on the original code-base up on the site:
This MUD is a derivative of SunderMud 1.0
SunderMud 1.0 is a derivative of ROM 2.3
ROM 2.3 is a derivative of Merc 2.1
Merc 2.1 is a derivative of Diku Alpha

Diku Alpha was created by:

Naysayer recant!
I bought a HPL book today - a collection of stories, even thought my budget doesn't allow me to go buying books on whims, and whilst I have a clearer idea - I have been pouring though the thing for hours, I still would like any help.
