i plan to head to the bookstore at some point to buy a new lovecraft book. of all of the homages, collections, anthologies and real novels that i will likely find there, what works should i keep an eye out for? i'm looking for something sheerly frightening, like the reanimator is. i've read the rats in the walls and the mountains of madness. what would you recomend?

Best: "The Colour Out of Space," "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"

Great: "The Call of Cthulhu," "At the Mountains of Madness," "The Dunwich Horror," "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," "The Doom That Came to Sarnath," "The Mound," "The Curse of Yig"

Good: "The Tomb," "Dagon," "The Festival," "The Whisperer in Darkness," "The Rats in the Walls," "The Shunned House," "Under the Pyramids," "The Haunter of the Dark," "The Nameless City," "The Shadow Out of Time," "The Strange High House in the Mist," "The White Ship"

Decent: "Pickman's Model," "The Temple," "The Music of Erich Zann," "Cool Air," "He," "Arthur Jermyn," "The Cats of Ulthar," "Nyarlathotep," "From Beyond," "The Picture in the House," "The Moon-Bog," "The Lurking Fear," "The Silver Key," "Celephaïs," "The Transition of Juan Romero," "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"

Poor: "Polaris," "Beyond the Wall of Sleep," "The Statement of Randolph Carter," "The Terrible Old Man," "The Quest of Iranon," "The Hound," "Hypnos," "The Horror at Red Hook," "The Dreams in the Witch-House"

Terrible: "The Unnamable," "The Tree," "The Thing on the Doorstep," "In the Vault," "The Beast in the Cave," "The Evil Clergyman," "The Outsider," "Herbert West - Reanimator"

Agree to disagree. It made for a fun splatter movie franchise, but on paper it reads like a really goofy version of Frankenstein.

Although I do have to edit my list a little: "Pickman's Model" is better than decent.

Whisperer in the darkness was pretty creepy towards the end when the guy was in talking to the things that took over his friends body.

Herebert west is degraded only by the hollywood rape of the frankenstein novel, which if you read the original work of is quite good actually and the reputation of which, stains all similar works
