Would you buy...?

Hey Everyone,

I have a questions regarding a Lovercraftesque book I'm considering putting together so I figured I should ask some fans. :)

Would you buy a book which consisted of some old stories that influenced Lovecraft and his mythos? Or would there even be any point in putting the time and money into it?

I really don't care about making any money from it but I would like to cover my costs. I think it would be something I would buy but I wanted to see what other people thought.

Thanks for the help,
Jacob

I think Chaosium has been there and done that. There series of books on "the Mythos" have covered that ground pretty well. I should know as I pretty much have all of them :D

I might buy something like that, unless it's another outrageously priced collection of stories, in which case I'd just look up all those old stories online.

Price

I couldn't say the exact price until I knew the page count but I would guess around $12.00 for a 200-250 page trade paperback.

Thanks to both for the feedback,

That's price isn't too bad.

I walked into the local Barnes & Noble book store last winter in hopes of picking up a a horror anthology, and while they had decent-sized selection, I think the cheapest book available in that category was $17.00.

Somehow, that just seems a ridiculous sum to drop on that kind of book.

I have mine priced at 11.50 for a 253 page paperback. So I would say some would be a descent price these days, but now or days with the POD format -- prices for books are a little bit higher because of the techology. I will put a suggestion about doing a bookstore on this site for writers on the site who have books available or soon to be available.

I'd buy if it would be available. Its not a wide selection here in Estonia when it comes to horror. Estonian genre is a bit tacky and the lovecraftian ones never reach these shores because the lack of demand.

Is this just a random collection, or the anthology that was mentioned?

I don't know what that list is. The anthology I was proposing would consist of stories written before Lovecraft, not inspired by Lovecraft. It would be stories which inspired Lovecraft in his writing and the development of the mythos.

Exactly. That is what got me confused.

Those are the stories in the anthology Nickolaus mentioned, so you can have a better idea of what you are getting for the price.

I don't see whats wrong with anything here. A book is to be published. So what if the stories are online too?

It is even more relevant for the book of Lovecraft influences. The overriding question is will the reader shell out the money for something they can get cheaper somewhere else. Most of Lovecraft's influences are in public domain, and freely available online. That means any potential reader of your antho could just read the stories there, and save themselves the money. Nothing is wrong with reprinting something that is found on the internet, but the editor and publisher have to make that business decision. If they work out the numbers, and it works, more power to them. I know Medium Rare is reprinting many books that are in public domain. Collectors realize they are in public domain, but they want nice copies of them. I still like having a hard copy of books that I like. So the editor/publisher has to ask him/herself whether their collection will be good enough that people will pay for the hard copy, despite the fact that they can read it for free. This requires a good deal of market research. If you have faith in the quality of your antho, and the facts back your faith, that should make the decision easy.

Exactly!

Yes...which is exactly why I asked the question in the first place. :D
