Help a Deep One out contest

I want to rework the background on this piece, since it doesn't really work for me and I would like to know what everyone thinks about the picture

Image

Why should you waste your valuable time critiquing my art? Because you are filled with the milk of human kindness! Surely not because you know that whoever offers the most helpful suggestions will win a desktop sized version of the new and improved piece, featuring whatever you want written on the sign?

Right now my paramount priority is that background, but I'll have the file open anyway so I can make whatever changes seem mandated. Good luck, gentlemen. You may fire when ready...

I don't see anything wrong with the background. If I'd do anything differently, I'd put some heavy oxidation on the structure behind the deep one and maybe some barnacles on the lower parts of the pier's posts.

The picture is awesome.

I aslo like the background. Maybe something on the wall to break it up a little, like a hazard sign or some grafitti.

i like it also
maybe you should make the building a little smaller in the background so we can see more of the sea?
and maybe the dock/pier should look a little more mossy and gross, lol

Yeah, the dock needs something, but that bleak and dreary horizon seems perfect for that Innsmouth look.

A background without peer

Yeah, the dock needs so much help. I was thinking barnacles too but I'm not sure if they would be visible from the distance... But it never hurts to try

Thank you for your excellent suggestions so far

Perhaps a little splash of light mottling would give the impression of encrustation?

How about a submarine periscope peaking out of the water...
Or maybe a "beware of reef" warning sign?

you would not see "the barnacles" you would want to see the idea of "the barnacles" the color and texture difference on the pier,

a general problem with compsistion now is the character standin in the transiton between building and dock, on one side its all wall, and on the other its dock and water. witht he wall creatin a bad tanent line down the character.

Sorry about the delay, I am still working on this but I have many other concerns at present. This is where I am at right now, please try and view it at full size on a black background

Image

I have a few tweaks left to do to the background but it is largely resolved. Now I am going to focus on the character

So far the winner is pandangerous for calling the composition problem. This will definately be addressed. I've ditched the dock since it was both problematic and unneccisary. Going with a minimalist approach now

Hopefully I can get this all taken care of by the end of December...

The background is pretty damn cool here. Give it some blood in the background too as they took a human sacrifice to summon Cthulhu.

Whoops!

Amusingly enough, I forgot that when I replaced the original file in my gallery that I would clobber the first picture in this thread. So much for your before and after...

To confuse matters further, I replied to this thread previously and the post didn't stick. Assuming this is a procrastinating Y2K error...

I don't see nothing wrong, seriously. I like it.

My bad

I clobbered the 'before' version so you can't see how desparately it needed help

But I am pleased that you like my revisions...
