Mythos Video Games

Post by cultistofvertigo »

So... here's what I got:

1991 - El Viento
1996 - Quake
2002 - Eternal Darkness
2006 - Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

That isn't everything. What else is there tough? The Wikipedia article for Hastur says he's also in a game called Earnest Evans, which I guess is a prequel to El Viento because he shows up in a cutscene in that game. If Q1 counts, what about the others? If so, does that make the Strogg a greater independent race? What about THIS!!! Does Prey count because it has the Dark Ones in it? Because there is an entry in Chaosium's mean monster book called "Dark Ones" but they don't sound like the same thing because these guys are maggot monsters that live in corpses of Great Old Ones (which doesn't make sense to me because I would think that the corpses dissapear like mi-go or something).

What do you guys got?

also, what's the deal with Vadrigar? Is it an Outer God or a race that serves the Outer Gods by entertaining them with the stench of battle even though the Outer Gods wouldn't know a fight if it hit them over the head (except for Shubbie of course)?

You forgot the biggest one of all

Alone in The Dark...there were three of them and they were originally all based around the Lovecraft Mythos

Yeah. The games predated the film though.

It is a sin to mention U.B's films in connection to videogames.

Only the first Alone in the Dark is Lovecraftian. The others explored other things such as pirate ghosts, etc.

There's an online flash-based adventure game called Arcane by Sarbakan.

And another online multiplayer semi-text semi graphics game called Lovecraft Country.

Speaking of text adventures there's The Lurking Horror and another one I can't think of off the top of my head.

In 2D graphical adventures there was Shadow of the Comet and Prisoner of Ice, both of which were very good, though Shadow was better IMO. Also there was a psuedo 3D point and click adventure game ( like MYST) called Necromonicon: The Gateway to Beyond. AND in that same vein but in "real" 3D is a new game that just came out this spring called Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened, where Holmes comes up against all sorts of Mythosy stuff including the big C.

There's also a browser base game called "Deanimator", Based on Herbert West:Reanimator, where you have to shoot zombies:

http://artscool.cfa.cmu.edu/~lee/deanimator.html

(If you play it, notice how one type of zombie (the big one that takes three hits to kill and does not fall when you shoot him in the legs) is very similar to the description of the black boxer in the original story. Interesting if the game maker intended it to be so.)

I am also trying to write now a game based on the story "Polaris", but it is not ready yet.

How is the Thing mythos related? It's the Thing related, I know that, but Lovecraft? What's the connection there? Which reminds me... why the hell is he and the Tripods and Triffids in the mean monster book? What do they have to do Cthulhu?

The Mythos isn't necessarily to do with Cthulhu.

And Triffids are win.
