The cops should've finished the job.

they missed their chance to kill the guy.. now that they beat the snot out of him, leaving him alive, they have to answer cop brutality charges and contend with the killer's side of the story*, which be sure to have a lot of legal nooks and crannies for a good lawyer to exploit, probably a lawyer who wants to be famous and has a couple of decks of race cards up each sleeve, and several people come out with books.
