First of all, I am not convinced that "Cthulhu" derives from any existing word.; HOWEVER-I should like to point out that in fact it sounds Suspciously semetic. Moreover the words "shoggoth","shub niggurath"[derived from *Sheol Nugganoth*], and "yog sothoth" have hebrew-like endings and possibly hebrew origin. It always seemed to me that HPL was trying to invent a language, albeit a semitic language. Yet he never attended college so regretably he never aquired the necessary linguistic techniques that say Tolkien used to construct new languages.

These beings didn't name themselves within the Lovecraft world, ancient scribes did. Yog Sothoth for example has ties with ancient egypt and the Hebrew population...So my guess is that most of the Great Old ones were named mostly by crazy jewish scribes and scholars. The word Shoggoth is prolly like that out of coincidence or because it sounds cool...

Nonsense; Lovecraft made this all up and you
know it

. I realize you're joking but the subject of my post was a serious inquiry. But I really have to wonder how Lovecraft, being as antisemitic as he was, managed to pick up on hebrew phonology. In fact, nearly all the names he gave his deities and creatures look like they might very well be hebrew derived except
Nyarlathotep, which is botched egyptian.

I dont know man, Lovecraft was a pretty smart guy...its highly probable of him picking up hebrew some were along the line, plus some of the names he prolly just pulled out of his ass

"Semitic" refers to several cultures and languages present in northern Africa and the Middle East (including Arabic). Only the term "anti-Semitic" refers to Hebrews specifically.
I can't say for sure, but I'm willing to bet the sound features pointed out in this thread are present in the other Semitic languages (since they share a common linguistic ancestor), thus making their presence in Al Azif a bit more authentic.
That or Lovecraft just got lucky when he pulled them out of his ass.

Bullshit, Its all AssPull, and if it isnt Asspull, then the guys who made the language are AssPullers.

Well, Yog-Sothoth is supposed to be the key and the gate, one with time and space...so, perhaps its a reference to his bubbly self.
