I think the Nazis paved the way for Nazis in fiction.
And Odin, have you needed relevance for any of my 2683 posts?

The Nazi Mythos connection is well established.
Nazi politics embraced all manner of occult theories, including the Hollow Earth.
A story I read back in the '60's explained the extermination camps as industrialized sacrifice to the Great Old Ones.
Frankly, I think Hitler and Cthulhu would have gotten along famously, until Tentacle Face decided that Adolph had served his purpose and sent him off to Yuggoth for a long vacation.
This is a scary thought-but it trivializes the Holocaust, so I won't be writing any stories about it.

Forgo all the stories that trivialise other genocides and acts of barbarism. If I see one more program glorifying the subjugation of the native Americans or painting the Crusades in a positive manner I'll throw up. You'll not be lowering any standards, don't worry.

what programs are you watching jp? if you're talking about old-fashioned cowboys-n-indians or paladin's-quest type things from hollywoodland, a broad historical scope wasn't usually a big crowd-puller.. but in my lifetime, people in general have been much more sensitive and litigious. i don't think there's been a lot of flippant use of the nazi holocaust, the manifest destiny carnage, or the christian persecution of the middle east..... except in comedic context, which is a freebie. so what have you been watching anyway?

I was merely pointing out how we're so tender about the Holocaust when they are so many other massacres we gloss over - maybe I didn't pick such good examples, but wasn't the whole Cathar thing part of the Crusades? And that was a fuck-up for the Church.

That's true. There are other massacres that are glossed over. And it doesn't require a love of the RCC to remember that the Greeks, Cypriots and Armenians were murdered by the Turks/Ottomans. Or that, more recently, atrocities have been committed in Sierra Leone, the Ivory Coast, the Sudan and others that might well have had the intervention of Western powers.

Again, as I was telling Burke, I just don't like to see lingering conscience or qualms about Western, and now ancient, aggressions whether for empire or defense in religious war paralyze what we might do now, and rightfully, on behalf of other people.

krakenten wrote:The Albegensian Crusade eliminated competition.
And it worked quite well, the Cathars were almost entirely eradicated, to the point where many of their doctrines and beliefs are now unknown.
Similarly, the Spanish Inquisition destroyed a potential fifth column threat to the Gothic Reconquista of Spain.
That worked very well, and secured Spain for the Church, later, Latin America was similarly scoured of native beliefs.
Competition isn't something God really wants us fighting over...
