I'm not sure, I doubt that Polynesian mythology was too well known in New England in the 30s, and even then, a giant octopus whose tentacles are lightning bolts and a dragon with a squid for a face don't jive too well.
I find Fe'e to be further proof for the existence of some colossal octopus rivalling the Colossal Squid and the Sperm Whale.
