Ligotti is HPL's sucessor.
King can also sling a tentacle with the best-yes, he's popular, he's also great.
HPL was a pioneer, he opened a whole new field of horror fiction, and others have come to settle there.
The Mythos is becoming overdone, and frankly, it needs to be freshened up, unless it's doomed to sink into parody and foolishness.

Western novels were once a very prolific form in the USA, some are still written, and many of them are good.
Robert E. Howard wrote western stories for the pulps.

I might not like westerns but, King's 'Dark Tower' series is kind of western'ish. And it kicks ass!

King told the people on his message board that the Dark Tower was his take on "La Morte d'Arthur" considered as a sphaghetti western.
Inspired, simply inspired!
People are hard on King, because he sells a lot of books, but dammit, the man has moments of sheer genius.
And "It" is worthy of Lovecraft himself.
Straub and Ligotti are moving us into new lands, as is Poppy Z. Brite-her "Are you Loathesome Tonight" is as subtle and effective a bit of biz as ever was done.
Imagine a Straub /Ligotti collaboration?

This Logitti guy sounds interesting, so I orded a book.
I've read a few of Louis L'Amor's stories, or listened to them on tape at least. "Case Closed No Prisoners" is my favorite.

Check out Allen Eckert's The Frontiersmen and That Dark and Bloody River for a slight change in the western genre. Both books novelize actual events in the late-18th through early-19th century Ohio River Valley. It's amazing what those people experienced as the whites encroached on Indian territory. The real thing makes The Last of the Mohicans look tame.
