What I mean is this: There is certainly a chance that there is a group of people out there somewhere who worship Cthulhu, despite his being a literary creation, and why not? There are people out there who will worship pretty much anything, regardless of its basis in reality

Is there any definate proof that Lovecraft invented Cthulhu? Perhaps he stumbled upon one of these cults, and borrow some of their lore for his account of the big guy. Far-fetched, but possible.

As the mythos has been around for a fair bit I’m sure it would not take much to set into action a surreal prank, like the priory of psion planting spurious artefacts and tomes. As well of course you would need an old journal from the once belonging to the founding member. lacing real with false events into a conspiracy ultimately leading to the demise of the founder forcing the cult under ground. Then forming (“reforming”) a cult based on mythos and seeing if non-mythos aware people would join and worship the great old ones.
And there you go you would of created your very own “Urban Mythos”

i kindof learned/ Disscovered a Cult or Sect around my town (Corpus Christi, TX) that was using the Simon Necronomicon along with the spellbook. i stumbled along the secret a few months ago, which inspired me to study more on the mythos and everything, and what they were doing semed really interesting. they were calling on Yog-Sothoth and Pazuzu, or something. i went to this magick store in the mall, and picked up a copy of the Simon Necronomicon and the Spellbook, and started studying it. this is what i can remember hearing them chanting:
Y' ai 'ng'ngah. Yog-Sothoth h'ee-l'geb f'ai throdog uaaah!
i have arranged a meeting with the Cult About Joining them. please know that i am not interested in a devotion to the mythos, i am only going to try and join to see if i can get an Indepth look at what they actually do. more on this later.

Is that phonetically spelt, or transcribed from the Simon Necronomicon?
Just spekaing of Mythos cults, did I mention I was in a temple dedicated to Cybele over the summer? It was in Naples, but it's since become a Catholic chapel. Still has a few statues and icons left, though, on the outside.

READ THIS BOOK!
Necronomicon Files: The Truth Behind Lovecraft's Legend
It explains pretty much everything there is to possibly know about the Necronomicon. A huge amount of research was put into it. It details the many variations of the Necronomicon, how the Simon one originated, how it has very little to do with Lovecraft, how even Lovecraft was annoyed by the number of people believing in the Necronomicon (even then), how he came up with it, how its power lies not in being a magical book, but that rather its power lies in its non-existence. etc...
