I think we would be okay either to use existing legends or to create them--to attribute legends to the city, province, area, and make it 'real' by using real places. To me, part of the enjoyment would be depicting local features that distinguish, even in a small way, that particular places from others. Like the architecture that Lovecraft noted in New England towns and used in stories like Innsmouth.

On the assumption that we're agreed on everything else, how's this for elimination.
1. We write the stories for the first round.
2. After the stories appear, we allow two weeks for voting.
3. The stories are ranked 1-5 by every person who votes. The stories with the fewest points go on to the 2nd round.
4. The next stories are written, with a week or two for voting.
Any questions? Any answers? Any rags, any bones?

Stories with the fewest points go on? I get it, but it just doesn't make sense.
In the interest of time I would say 1 week to write the story, say saturday to saturday, then another week for voting.
Thats my 2 cents.

That's fine.
Fewest points or most points, it doesn't matter much. But people are in the habit of ranking their favorite as 1, not 5, so I said the fewest points.

I guess you're right, I'm just not used to it so it didn't make sense.

i'm also in favor of a shorter duration, even though i write pretty slowly. when people see how the whole thing goes, maybe they will be more likely to participate in subsequent rounds.
has aleister been around at all lately? maybe as a prize, he could mention the winning entry in the announcements on the temple homepage

One week as Enkil mentioned sounds good, with a week for voting. I suppose the first round might as well be the local legend/myth, with a story from non-human perspective for the final. We can start as soon as everyone agrees.

I PM'd Aleister about a week ago and haven't heard back yet. . . . [/quote]

I hate to mention this, but I'm going to be gone on vacation, without internet access, for 2 weeks starting saturday. So you may as well consider my entry withdrawn unless you want to hold the contest off until September.

Well, unless we hear again from Pinonomicon or Eternities End, it would be a contest of 2, so we may have to wait.

Perhaps the contest winner could submit one of his works, completely edited and complete, for the story archive. Aleister permitting.

I take it that you're back now.
If I can, can I get one more confirmation from everyone participating before I make a thread for the competition in the 'general discussion' section (since it won't be only for 'writers' but whoever wants to read and vote)?

I am back, and prepared to write.

All right. I'll post it up with a full description in the 'general discussion section', with the entries to be delivered by next Sunday. That'll give everybody plenty of time. Then we'll have a week of voting afterward.
If it turns out to be just us three, we can still make it two rounds, eliminating one each time.

I'll enter, but only if I don't have to write anything new.
