still, the painting wasn't painted for any Lovecraft story, and his clothes weren't ripped in the story, he was in a lifeboat the whole time.

No he wasnt in a lifeboat the whole time in fact most of the story is set outside the lifeboat if you're referring to dagon in fact i'd say that that is most definitely it either that or just a random macabre picture that fits the book.
