Does This Piss You Off?

Post by Dwight L. MacPherson »

Does it piss you off when people refer to themselves as "scholars?"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that not a title that should be given to you by others?
Every time I read where someone has said "I am a scholar..." I want to travel to their home and beat them about the head and shoulders.

Whaddaya think? Stupid pet peeve or do you feel the same way?

These days, I just take scholar to mean "overweight dork who has never touched a boob."

Or like me saying I'm a militant Buddhist extremist.

I should revise that definition to say ". . . never touched a boob (other than his/her own)."

Yeah--it just irks me. The guy who set me off was saying: "as a scholar, I bristle at the word myth." I proceeded to tell him that if it was a good enough term for Social and Cultural Anthropologists--it MUST be "scholarly."

Ass.*

*The guy who uttered this immensely brainless statement.

What annoys me more is when people call themselves intellectuals. It's just a dumbed down, modern, version of the scholar. And from my limited experiance, is mostly used by politically aware people.

Then again, for me it's context has only been high school, and the word itself annoys me phonetically.

Since one of the meanings of scholar is just "student", calling oneself a scholar doesn't actually mean much.

The persons who usually refer to themselves as "scholars" use it before making assertion that puts down another person. That's what bothers me.

I am a student, but I would not dream of calling myself a scholar.

i can't even really call myself a student. i'm sort of an intermittently passive observer..

anyway, i think 'scholar' has more connotations than just merely studying. it carries the weight of a Title, deservedly or not, and usually a little whiff of pomposity for good measure
