Wednesday was spent on a guided tour of Marrakech, featuring the Royal Palace, a ‘retail opportunity’ at the Berber Pharmacy where we were encouraged to buy spices and natural remedies and a visit to ‘Department Store’ where we the only customers!
The Square in Marrakech is a massive spectacle of snake charmers and performing monkeys, that doesn't come alive until after dusk, but even in the afternoon, when we were there, Mizuno MP-68 Irons
don’t even think about recording any of it for posterity unless you're prepared to pay for the privilege!
The impressive Al Maaden Golf Club, designed by Kyle Phillips, who created The Dukes St Andrews and The Grove (Watford), was our next competition venue - and what a course it is. It emerges from the desert with lush fairways, Mizuno MP-57 Irons
water hazards and wonderfully sloping and undulating greens.
Returning to Amelkis for the final round, was certainly an advantage paired against two of my rivals for the Senior prize. With my 39 points it was enough to overtake them but not enough to beat two other guys from Singapore. However, I was able to toast myself as third in my category and leading European! My wife's 37 points sadly, was only enough for third in the senior ladies category on countback.
A traditional Moroccan meal, a belly dancer and a great crowd of nearly 50 players including groups from Greetham Valley Ladies, Mizuno MX-950 Irons
Singapore and ex-pats from Hacienda del Alamo in Murcia, helped the evening go with a swing.
A treasured memory will be hiring the assistance of a caddie at each venue, Mizuno MX-560 is highly recommended and cheap. I’d never used the services of a caddie before but it made such a difference to playing the game.Mizuno JPX Fairway Wood
No bunkers to rake, divots to replace club to clean, while being shown the best lines off the tee and on the greens. Advice for club selection also help enormously.
Playing in Morocco for the first time was an interesting experience but apart from the caddies, not one we're likely to repeat. The hotel food wasn’t nearly as good as in Spain and the drinks were more expensive.Mizuno F-60 Fairway Wood
Like most Brits we tended to buy our drinks in the supermarkets at a fifth of the cost and party in each others' rooms!
