What is up with these stories!?!

Post by Danial »

I just read Sweet Ermengarde last night... and thought it was rubbish! Looking it up in Joshi's Lovecraft Encyclopedia, he says, "With A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson and Ibid, it forms a trilogy of HPL's comic gems." Now I've read both of these months ago and thought they were crap too. How are they "comic gems"? I don't get it. Can someone please explain?

i haven't read these, but i might get the new collected works pretty soon and see what's what. not every one of hpl's stories can resonate with greatness..

'familiarity breeds contempt' is an old saying that applies a lot in my experience. i can't handle any subject too much without wearing the luster off. that's one reason why i haven't been through the whole hpl catalog already.

Two years ago at the Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, S. T. read the entire thing in his animated voice and had us all falling on the floor clutching our sides -- one of the funniest things I've ever witness'd.
