Hey miz,
no panic. You can play CthulhuMUD with a telnet connection, and for this you don't need to download any software - TELNET is a program built-in with Windows (say, like Internet Explorer). To start playing, just go on Start->Run and enter:
Then of course, most (if not all) players do not open TELNET directly but use some program with features that make a player's life more comfortable (say, for one, enabling coloured text). These programs are called "MUD clients" and basically are more refined, game-oriented programs that work on TELNET connections. Note that these are third-party, general softwares - none is distributed by, affiliated to, or built-in with CthulhuMUD. Most of them are freeware though, and they really make your gaming experience more enjoyable, so I advice you to download one.
I personally use Zuggsoft's Zmud in its free, discontinued version (zMUD version 3.62a, 32-bit). It always worked well for me since I was using it on Win98, then XP, then Vista.
Hope this helps,
Ray

Hmm, no way then, I'm afraid. Some MUDs have a Java applet-like WEB interface, but CthulhuMUD doesn't (I'm not a professional but i suppose that this would have some privacy concerns, and more importantly, i imagine it would imply the need of a server to "repass" telnet requests between you and the MUD. I think).
