Well somewhat Sumerian.. a lot of it is as close to Sumerian mythology as any other ancient religion..

I really recommend reading "Necronomicon Files", it has probably the most complete collection of information I have seen dealing with the various Necronomicons, hoaxes, and everything related.

I wouldn't sound so final about saying there is no 'real' Nec, Aleister :)

I mean to keep a very open mind about it. Who knows what time might reveal.

Yes.. I do try to keep an open mind about such things. It is mainly because of a few things that I refer to it like that:

1) There was never any mention of a Necronomicon before Lovecraft. Ever.

2) Lovecraft's letters (which are quite numerous) explain his intentions in creating the Necronomicon, sources for his inspiration, where he got the names, etc...

3) Only a few paragraphs of this Necronomicon were ever even written by Lovecraft. They also dealt with topics that many people thought were loosely associated with various religions, but anything can be associated with anything else if you try hard enough.

I think there very well may be book(s) out there which are 'like' the fictional Necronomicon, but not by that name, and not having anything to do with any Lovecraftian entities, as they did not exist before Lovecraft.

You can tell I try hard not to get on a rant about this topic, and it is easy to go on and on..

:)

Yeah, I try to avoid ranting about that subject too.

I was more thinking about the astral or the spiritual version of the Nec. It sounds new-ageish but long story short: the real life imprints, like fake versions and the image it has left to people is the same effect that any other book would leave. In the end it is starting to matter very little if there really was a real Nec, because it has the effects of something real. It's like a ripple through time: like a pond, where there first come waves and then follows a stone into the middle of it. Plus there are several theories about it existing in elemental planes, like Plato's thoughts of ideas existing as matter in other dimensions.

Now that's a rant :D

I like your point adrian, accelerated gains as to their complexity. Given his decceptive nature, the evil one would have more then one way to record his daibolic history. If the koran/bible is the word of god, then the necronomicon is undoubtably the devils book. Given the which hunts and superstitions of old if it ever existed it is likely far gone now.

I think more pertinent is whether mr lovecraft actually created it to add conjecture and mystery to his works, hinting at their realism by anchoring some fictitous novelty into history that leaves us asking "could it have been?"

Carlos Castenda did the same thing with Don Juan, the Yauqui socerer. This IMO is what makes these authors so ingenious.

Just print it out if you want to and thats that.
What language is that site in?

And, on a similar subject - has there ever been a hoax 'King in Yellow', or a legitimate attempt to write it?

Cthulhu needs to learn how to type ;)

Anyway I was wondering why do the Satanists refer to the Nec a sa 'satanic' book? How is Nec even related to Christianity? The paradigm in Nec is Chaos and random events whereas Christianity has determinism or whatever. Two completely different things. Maybe Satanists try to bind Nec to their lore to gain some of the aura that is greater around the Mythos than it has ever been around Satanism. Anyway I always find it disturbing that Mythos entities are related to Christian ones as Azag-Thoth would so kick Jesus' ass :P

The link doesn't work anymore due to copyright breaches :D
But I do have those files there in pdf format relating to studies in Mythos, Chaos Magick, Chaos Theory and some general horror stuff and occultism. I'd love to find a place to share them.

And P.S. Castaneda is shite :D

I remember being told by someone that Satanism isn't actually to do with the figure of Lucifer, but with the veneration of one's self, rather than of dieties. Could just have been a load of shit, though.

No that's right but even then it's about ego and such so Satanists should rejoice over the "Hellraiser" movies not the Nec. Necronomicon is about the destruction of man and all his deities. Which is not related to Satanism at all.

There's probably something in it somewhere. I mean, "Bel and the Dragon" has pretty much no context to any modern relgion, but it's in the Catholic (and only the Catholic, I think) Bible.

Yeah the Bible is a reliable source as it's been re-translated by countless rulers in Europe to match and justify their vims.

See, I took "Bel and the Dragon", as a book, as an example, because no amount of misinterpretation can give meaning to proving that a statue is just a statue.

Oh, sorry then. Anyway I don't see any connection between Satanism and Mythos other than an attempt to make satanism look dark.
