What to avoid during a networking event

Post by Fabian1 »

People do not always understand the importance of networking. Even when they do, there are a number of things that they subconsciously do that ruin their chances of efficient networking. It is important to remember that at all networking events , everyone is trying to do exactly what you are, you must also keep in mind that your time and energy is valuable and work accordingly. There are some critical points that a person should keep in mind about the “don’ts” of networking and be conscious of avoiding them at all costs.
What not to do

• Never ever make the mistake of going to a networking event with a friend. In the beginning everyone is a little nervous of networking events and so they decide to take a friend along. But in the end, there is no real networking done as you only end up talking to the people you know. Networking is about meeting new people, and this is what you should essentially keep in mind.
• Do not attempt to meet and interact with everyone you see. Not always will they be beneficial to your line of networking. Have a decent amount of conversation with a person, decide if you can both help each other and then exchange cards, perhaps. Knowing a lot of people but having no real connection with them is a waste of time.
• Do not waste time with people attempting to sell you something. You will find them at every event.
• Do not follow one person around or hover in hopes of having a conversation with them. This is impolite and quite stalker like too.
• Never interrupt a conversation. This is extremely rude and you can get a bad name at events for this reason. Always wait for a chance, and speak only after a person is done speaking to you.
