Solving the Derleth Problem...

Post by Eidolon »

Everything August Derleth did to preserve the Mythos might as well have been undone by his insistent codification of Lovecraft's original, nebular cosmology. Before Derleth became really prominent the Gods were slippery, difficult to understand, often sharing attributes and inconsistent details which lent the whole business an air of maddening esotericism. Then Derleth had to go along and influence the Mythos towards his own ten-cent Christian allegory of a theology: look at what Nodens became, look at what happened to everyone else: You get 'The Elder Gods' stepping in left, right and center as benevolent dei-ex-machinae, whilst the Great Old Ones are slotted neatly into Aristotelian element affinities. Granted, all this was wonderful for Chaosium, who have made bucketfuls from CoC:d20, but in my opinion it puts a bullet in the head of what Grand Magus HPL was trying to express - a painful, horrific, incomprehensible and utterly impersonal cosmos in which the survival of mankind is not only unlikely but undesirable. Plus, Derleth's writing blows. He should have been the one to die of starvation-resultant stomach cancer, not Lovecraft.

So... what I want to know is, how should HPL purists go about efficiently removing the Christian stain from the Mythos?

I've been making a small attempt at belittling (bad choice of words, but I mean taking away the importance of) the Christian element by adding in a lot of Norse and Jewish references to my stories, creating a feeling that all old religions owe their existence in some way to the Elder Gods.

i don't know what we can do, except produce more new stories that are true to the original spirit. if enough people do that, the derleth perversion will be a footnote.. or at most a sidebar in the history books

And that's what we should do.
Also, critical essays undermining this view of things could make an impact - look how important S.T. Joshi is in the Mythos and he hasn't even written a story.
