is Empire of Satanis "Lovecraftian" ???

Post by darrick »

the Dunwich Herald reviewed my rpg Empire of Satanis. it was fairly positive although for some reason they took issue with its Lovecraftian influence...?

so i humbly open it up to you guys... besides using the actual names like Cthulhu, Yog Sothoth, the Necronomicon, etc... what makes something Lovecraftian?

IMO, using the afore-mentioned icons makes something Mythos, whereas capturing the spirit of a typical Lovecraft tale (without drawing any direct connections to the Mythos) makes it Lovecraftian.

Case in point, John Carpenter's wonderful little horror flic, The Thing. No direct references to the Cthulhu Mythos, but it has many of the trademark characteristics, making it a Lovecraftian tale.

Now take another fun film, Cast a Deadly Spell. It's loaded with mythos icons, but it doesn't really follow the narrative stylings of Lovecraft. It's a Mythos movie (albeit an uncharacteristic one), but it's a real stretch to justify slapping the Lovecraftian label on it.

Lovecraftian to means a sense of dread that evokes creepiness while not concentrating on "shock". The reason I think Lovecraft does not translate well to film or TV is because they tend to go for the horror element rather than the suspense element that pervades Lovecraft's fiction. He wrote dark fiction rather than horror in his own opinion. As others have said merely mentioning characters from the mythos does not Lovecraftian make.
