For Immediate Release:

New horror film to bring name cast & Sundance producers to Seattle, Astoria
Seattle Poet/Journalist Grant Cogswell Turns Lovecraft Story Into Contemporary Statement

Seattle, WA, September 12th -- 'Cthulhu', a feature film being shot in Seattle, WA and Astoria, OR beginning on the 27th of September, is coming to Astoria this Saturday to hold an open casting call. Auditions will be held at the P.A.C. (Performing Arts Center) on Franklin and begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday the 17th, and end at 6:00 pm. Casting is for leads, featured extras, supporting characters, and extras. They plan to use a mix of talent and crew, both local and out of town, from all over the Pacific Northwest.

"Cthulhu" is based on the Lovecraft short story, "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". The cast stars Scott Green, co-star of Gus Van Sant's "Last Days" and Jennifer Westfeldt ("Kissing Jessica Stein"). The film is being produced by two recent Sundance alumni, Jeffrey Brown ('Police Beat', 2005) and Anne Rosellini ('Down to the Bone', 2004). Shooting will commence on September 27th and go until the last week of October with primary locations in Seattle, WA and Astoria, OR.

The film will be shot in the style of atmospheric Japanese neo-horror (a la "Cure") with elements of the psychological thriller ("Rosemary's Baby") and apocalyptic horror ("28 Days Later"). The story tells of a man drawn by his mother's death back to his estranged family in the small town where he grew up. Reacquainted with his closest childhood friend he discovers his father's ministry of a New Age church is connected to old massacres and frightening legends.

"Cthulhu is a universal story addressing the current dire political and ecological situation," says writer Grant Cogswell. "The threat of terrorism and the security state, and of global warming, and stands as a warning that our dearest habits endanger our civilization." Director Daniel Gildark adds, "It's a coming-home-again tale about the power of heredity-- what we can escape from and what we cannot."

Director Gildark has made several acclaimed local shorts in Portland and created the memorable, surreal imagery used for MTV's '120 Minutes'; screenwriter Grant Cogswell is a local poet, journalist and environmental activist and is a Richard Hugo House Belltown Fellow; cinematographer Sean Kirby won the Golden Space Needle Award at SIFF in 2005 for his work on 'Police Beat' and 'The Gits'.

The film will feature a classic score by Portland horror film scholar Willy Greer and a soundtrack by Modest Mouse, Blood Brothers, Gram Parsons, Joy Division.
